Many thanks to the relatives that joined us and our special thanks to
Pam Walmsley, our local Palliative Care Nurse, who is based at Woking Hospice.
Karen explained that Pam has worked closely with the home over the years and both felt that the meeting was an ideal opportunity for Pam to explain her role and for everyone to meet her in person.
Pam described her role and explained the term palliative care as being dealing with end of life care but also now encompassing long term conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease and Cardiac problems.
Pam went on to discuss our role with the PCT in helping residents and relatives to consider ‘preferred priorities of care’ and advanced directives such as wishes for resuscitation.
Pam emphasised how important it is for us all to plan for the future and for others to be aware of our wishes.
Discussion and refreshment s followed.
Our next meeting will be in May. If anyone has any subjects they feel would make a good meeting please contact me.
Our residents have been enjoying a wide range of activities and entertainments over recent months.
Highlights have included a Valentines Evening Supper where the residents were served a three course meal, including wines and soft drinks, entertainment was provided by Laurence who played romantic tunes during the meal and then hosted a musical quiz. All of the residents were presented with a red rose and a goody bag filled with chocolate hearts.
We have recently made three trips to Weatherspoons Pub in Woking for a lunch time drink, this is a very popular outing and we try to accommodate those residents who wish to go.
Now that the weather has improved slightly trips down to the local garden centre have resumed and several groups of residents have enjoyed cream teas in the café.
Residents in our upstairs lounge have been enjoying their own programme of events, and have recently been entertained by Drew playing the guitar and Mike on the keyboards. Afternoon tea parties in the garden lounge downstairs have proved to be very popular with our frailer residents who feel it is still a little too cold to venture out.
Our next meeting will be held in May and we will advise you of the date in due course. If anyone has any suggestions of topics that they would like to be discussed at the next meeting please contact Karen.
Following the success of the last two years we will once again be entering pictures painted by our residents into the local craft exhibitions which will be held in the summer. We will let you know the dates nearer the time should any relatives wish to attend.
For the last three years we have sponsored the Children’s party at this annual event and will be doing so again this year.
Sunday 25th July is the date for our annual Garden Party and the organisation for this year’s event is already underway! This year’s theme will be a “Street Party” reminiscent of the war era with trestle style tables, bunting and traditional tea party food.
